This book is based on the following three installations made during 1996 and 1997:
- Preservation Situation III, Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island, New York.
- Simulacrum I, ACHK-De Paviljoens, Almere, the Netherlands.
- Simulacrum II, Holly Solomon Gallery, New York, N.Y.

Each installation was made for a specific space; its location, architecture and function directly influenced the form of these works, and thus are an integral part of them.

The book contains three chapters, each based on one of the three installations. Three authors were invited to contribute a text for a chapter by thinking of themselves as a visitor to the installation. They were asked to write a personal, non-art historical text, poem or story. The authors are Marja Bloem, Tom Farmer and Janet Koplos. The fourth author, Bert Steevensz, was asked to be a visitor to all the installations.
