Sea of Plastic and Clay
1982

installation of wet clay and blue transparent plastic
Galerie Micro, Oosterhout, the Netherlands

Looking back at this installation of a floor filled with slabs of wet clay in pieces of blue plastic, reminds of the period when Hurkmans started working less with ceramics and more with unfired clay to explore the confluence of various contradictions, such as the artificial and cultivated versus the natural and uncultivated. Although the work Sea of Plastic and Clay from 1982 was, at the time, already a comment on human relationships to Earth's resources, nowadays the installation can be viewed through new perspectives.
