Rini Hurkmans

about

"In this turbulent world, it is imperative that the art world provides audiences with a platform that, unlike the abundant circulation of images and commentary from the media, confronts people with a more individual and open, focused and visual vision of the world we live in".

Tree as Self Portrait, 2004

Rini Hurkmans (August 26, 1954, Deurne) works as a visual artist since 1982. She studied at the Academy for Visual Art Education in Amersfoort (1974-77) and at the St. Joost Academy for Art and Design in Breda (1977-81). Her first museum solo exhibition is Current Events at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam in 1991, after which she lived in New York from 1992 to 1993 and participated in the international studio program of MoMA PS1. Currently, she lives in Amsterdam and France.

Hurkmans is a regular visiting lecturer and she worked as a teacher and mentor at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam from 1990 to 2021. She participated (2010-17) in the research group of LAPS, Research Institute for Art and Public Space in Amsterdam. In collaboration with LAPS and together with Jeroen Boomgaard, she was the driving force and co-editor of the book Compassion. A Paradox in Art and Society (Amsterdam: Valiz, 2017). In 2019, she worked as Artist in Residence at the Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR), which resulted amongst others in a published essay (Roma Aeterna, 2020) and the exhibition Pietà, A Reconsideration of the Gesture (Lumen Travo Gallery, 2020-21).

Her work is included in many outstanding public and private collections. She exhibited in galleries and museums, such as Lumen Travo Gallery, Amsterdam; Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam; The Merchant House, Amsterdam; Huis Marseille, Amsterdam; Het Noordbrabants Museum, 's-Hertogenbosch; Museum Catharijneconvent, Utrecht; Stedelijk Museum, Schiedam; Sonsbeek 2008: Grandeur, Arnhem; Outdoor projects in the Tuileries gardens, Musée du Louvre, Paris; Peter Freeman Gallery, Paris; Femme(s), Art of the World, Genève; Museum of Latin American Art, La Plata, Argentina; Holly Solomon Gallery, New York City; Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Staten Island, New York City; MoMA PS1, New York City; Gallery M&R Fricke, Düsseldorf.

Hurkmans realizes artworks in public spaces in the Netherlands and abroad, including a sculpture for the ‘Parque de la Memoria’ in Buenos Aires (under construction). Presently, she works on a monument that is commissioned by the municipality of Amsterdam. The occasion is the murder of the Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries. Through the monument, Peter R. de Vries will be remembered but the artwork also represents the values he stood for, which correspond with the values of Amsterdam as a city. The monument for Peter R. de Vries on Leidseplein is unveiled the 15th of July 2024.
